5K FOR KAPPIE
The Delta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma started 5K for Kappie in 2022 to honor our late sorority sister, Catherine Williams, who passed away June 2nd, 2020 after a courageous 13-month battle with osteosarcoma. Catherine Williams was just 18 years old, and a recent graduate of North Atlanta High School. She was admitted to and excited to attend the University of Georgia in the Fall of 2020. In the week before her death, Catherine accepted an early bid and was initiated into the Delta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma as a double legacy.
All proceeds from 5K for Kappie go to CURE Childhood Cancer, a non-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through funding targeted research while supporting patients and their families devastated by a childhood cancer diagnosis. Since the inaugural race in 2022, we have raised over $230,000 for CURE Childhood Cancer. These funds make incredible impacts; this past year all the funds raised were used to help a study for the treatment of metastatic bone cancer, the exact cancer that Catherine had.
As more time goes by, it is crucial that we continue to honor the beautiful life of Catherine and shine light on childhood cancer every year. We are overwhelmed by the amount of love and support that the Athens community has given 5K for Kappie over the past three years! Catherines light continues to shine each and everyday.
KAPPA KRAWFISH
Each Spring Kappa Krawfish, brings the taste of the south right to our lawn; a crawfish boil complete with all of the fixings, straight from Louisiana. Live music, amazing vendors and sweet treats are some other key players which allow us to showcase some of Athens' local talent! All of the proceeds from this event go to the National Alliance on Mental Illnesses (NAMI). More information on NAMI below.
In the Spring of 2022, we hosted Kappa Krawfish in conjunction with out Spring Parents' weekend and we were overwhelmed with the results! Kappa hosted 23 vendors in the house who sold everything from clothing, jewelry and art. The girls were especially thrilled to have the Girl Scouts there selling cookies! We are thrilled to announce that we were able to raise over $40,000 from this year's boil alone!
